What's the mission?

The next chapter in our journey is about to begin... We have recently been accepted to serve with MMM, an international mission organisation established to help Christian ministries with their building and maintenance needs. Their NZ base is in Pirongia (which is in the Waikato), where we will relocate in 2020 after 4.5 years in Waikanae. There we will serve with MMM in New Zealand for 9 months or so, before taking up the role of Project Coordinators for MMM Fiji in 2021. The MMM Fiji base is at Sabeto Christian Camp, 20 mins from Nadi airport.

 So as we journey towards Fiji there are many things on our to-do list, and sharing our story seemed like an important step.

 We first became involved with MMM in 2006 while working at Totara Springs Christian Centre in Matamata. Roy was doing his building apprenticeship while Rachael was working in the ministry team as the Kids Camp and Discipleship Coordinator.

 We joined a short term team to Savusavu, Fiji where we stayed with a local family, we loved it so much we returned 6 months later to carry on with the project.

 Roy completed his building apprenticeship in 2008 and since then we have done numerous trips to Fiji, one of these working with MMM at Coral Coast Christian Centre. We have also taken our kids several times, as well as a team from our church to help our Fijian friends and village in Savusavu after Cyclone Winston in 2016 brought widespread destruction to Fiji.

 Now we are heading back for a new adventure. Our family all share a love for Fiji, the people and culture and we are keen to be able to use the gifts that God has given us to serve in a practical way, in a country we love.

We know it has been a while and we usually send out these updates a little more regularly… but we have specifically been waiting until today to share some exciting news! A special announcement… MMM NZ and NZCMS (New Zealand Church Missionary Society) are pleased to announce a new partnership to support Roy and Rachael Hogan’s ongoing call to live and minister in Fiji. Roy and Rachael, with their three children, Joshua, Gabrielle, and Caleb Hogan have lived in Nadi, Fiji, since May 2022. They have been serving as Project Coordinators for MMM in Fiji. Roy and Rachael have now discerned a longer-term calling. In order to support this call, NZCMS have come alongside the Hogan family to become their “sending agency.” This means that NZCMS will take responsibility for their ongoing well-being, financial and prayer support. Roy and Rachael’s work with MMM will be unchanged, and they will continue the strategic work of building and maintenance projects supporting Christian Ministries in Fiji

Crazy Day, Crazy Week, Crazy Life

At times it feels pretty relentless. I often hear myself saying, “Crazy day, crazy week, crazy life.” Every day is an adventure, every day unexpected things happen, life barely goes to plan… you just need to take a breath, throw all expectations out the window and just do what you can on the day! We are now right in the middle of our first full dry season in Fiji. That means, it is the best time for building projects and teams from New Zealand are super keen to escape the cold and warm up in Fiji and so we are keeping super busy! Wrapping up a great year

As I sit snuggled in a big duvet and sipping a hot lemon and honey drink, it reminds me that we are back in a very different world to the one we have been living in this year. This week we have been tackling a bit of reverse culture shock as we reintegrate back into New Zealand life while also fighting a bout of COVID, forever disrupting our plans.  It is super frustrating to have had plans ruined yet again from COVID when we have been looking forward to this week for so long. We have missed Roy’s family Christmas and a visit to Tauranga to see good friends; we are not sure if we will be able to reschedule these plans as we head down to Kāpiti and have commitments down there. We are praying that a bit of enforced rest now after a busy year will mean we are healthy and able to do everything else we want to do during our time in New Zealand.
